I am too a geek!

“You just lost all your geek points. :-( I don't know if I can read you anymore. There was not one SciFi show there--not even Battlestar Galactica on Friday. Ren, Ren, I am ashamed.”

So, Brenda snatched some geek points from me in my comments and I feel the need to defend myself…

I DO watch Battlestar Galactica but kind of whimsically. I like it well enough but I think its far more soap opera than sci-fi and sometimes by 10 pm on Friday night I feel like I have just had enough drama for the week. But that said, I do think it’s a very good show; I just don’t feel committed to it…, which is a common occurrence in my life (see also: vegetarianism, poetry, illustration, graduate studies and cleaning).

And hey! I watched it this past week and what the heck is up with Lieutenant Cat dressing down Captain Thrace in front of the teams and Thrace letting her do it? C’mon. I may have missed a few episodes here and there but I don’t for a minute believe that Starbuck would let her get away with that, alcohol and grief or not.

What other sci-fi (both on SciFi and on other channels) is out there that I should be watching? I do often indulge in the Sci-Fi Channel movie and while I would never claim that they are good, they can be darn entertaining. I don’t watch any variation of Stargate because I just have no freaking idea what is going on in those shows (ok, I did watch the one with Colm Meaney but you know….that was because Colm Meaney was in it).

Please don’t mention Lost to me. I don’t care for it. I won’t go into in and I certainly won’t criticize anyone else for liking it (I watch Reba for heaven’s sake!) but I just can’t watch that show and although I guess it’s got some sci-fi elements to it, I don’t know that I would call it that. And I did try to watch Invasion and Surface but what actually stuck was Threshold and they took that one away. And what I liked about Threshold was that it wasn’t “Hey, do you think there could be aliens?” “Gee, I don’t know, do you think I’m an alien?” but rather the “OHHOLYCRAPWEGOTALIENS!WHATAREWEGOINGTODO?” aspect of it. And the Peter Dinklage aspect too. But that’s all gone now.

AND HEY!!! DOCTOR WHO! I watch Dr. Who and yes, I will watch them over and over and I will watch them when they start running on Sci-Fi because they are good. And I hope I can still find a sneaky geeky way to get hold of the upcoming season.

And P.S. I’d just like to point out that there is a SciFi movie on the 18th called Rottweiler. I’m just sayin…

P.P.S. Yeah, right, Brenda. I’ll try to write a book because I see just how much fun you are having with that. HA!

A lot of people I work with tried to get me to watch the Stargate shows and I tried long enough to figure out what was going on, but I never really liked Stargate: SG1. We do still watch Stargate Atlantis, though, but that is only because my wife and daughter have a thing for Ronin...

Oh good, guess I'm not a geek. Not really "into" a lot of "sci-fi." I do love me that new Battlestar Galactica though. I think of it as more dramatic than soap opera-y.

I do love Lost, but wouldn't necessarily classify that as sci-fi. And Invasion is taking so damn long to get to any sort of point, I don't know what the hell it is!

well, i am a geek because, well,i just am. i watch no geeky tv at all but when donovan was a newborn i was really into "starting over" and that makes me the kind of geek that isn't even cool, unlike the geekness y'all are talking about which is geeky in an "i heart dorks" bumpersticker sort of way (geeks are the new cool, you know). but hey---surface is filmed right here in wilmington! did you know that? i have never seen it, but aparently there was a tsunami in town recently.
i don't know how to sign my own name. this isn't donovan

i like steph's comment - i think some people are a little too wrapped up in labelling themselves. i bet many of the pop culture loving tech savy geeks were outsiders back in school complaining about all the cliques - now geekdom has become a clique of its own with geek bullies taking away people's geek points!

Good point Dave. I always wonder, what is the difference (like it matters) between a geek, dork, nerd, and dweeb? I suspect I have a bit of each in me. I'm definitely not one of the "cool kids." Hey, they just all went out to lunch together, while I sat here on the internets!

well, the geeks don't want me and neither does anyone one else *sob!*. to be completly honest about all this...i don't care what you call me, i probably still won't answer, steph...you are a HUGE geek (winner of the greatest, most wonderfullest, smartest nursing student ever award at glendale college!) and um... yeah, that would be my BROTHER who picked on me as a child (although not nearly as much as my other brother) talking about bullies. go figure.

I resemble that remark, Dave!

I certainly went through that as a D&D playing, comic book and SF reading, band member at a rural redneck high school. I resented it a bit back then (although we were often misunderstood - for example, the band bus was co-ed and lightly chaperoned whereas the football bus wasn't), but I think it's a little different now -- everyone tries to be so different that they end up the same.

Remember the scene in Life of Brian where Brian says "You're all individuals" and they all chant "Yes, we're all individuals" and he says "You're all different" and they all chant "Yes, we're all different" then someone from the back of the crowd says, "I'M NOT!" -- kinda like that...

I miss one day and I become a geek bully! Now how the hell did THAT happen? ok, ok, you can have all your geek points back!

On the subject of geeks... My Mom got here from Montana tonight and the first thing I did was show her the Battlestar episode on the iPod. Her comment was, "But it's too small to see!" I triumphantly whipped out the reading glasses she got me for Christmas and said, "Not for me!"

Now there is a show out there that none of the post-Buffy's have mentioned and I am surprised. Doesn't anyone watch Bones? I mean, c'mon, David Boreanz however-you-spell-it Angel! And what about Firefly on dvd followed up by Serenity? Now there is some damn fine sci-fi (again with a major post Buffy cast--the crew has three Buffy/Angel villains in it). I mention the dvd because there are 13 episodes on it--more than ever made it onto tv so it is worth owning. ok, enough geekiness for one evening. Off to bed to dream about book contracts (HAH!)
